There’s a new type of pageant in town! On January 17, Ms. Wheelchair South Dakota will take place for the first time in four years. The women of Sioux Falls will be competing at The District, that is, if Vicki Kerkvliet and Kendra Gottsleben can find some contestants to enter the event. And though these two busy and ambitious women have a goal in mind, they still need people to contribute time, money, and as stated, they need a few contestants.
Unlike other pageants that seem to be more popular, the Ms. Wheelchair Pageant is all about inner beauty and the promotion of acceptance. Both women agree that it’s very important to show acceptance of all disabilities, as well as spread the word on awareness and self-advocacy. Everyone has something to offer society, whether or not a disability is in place.
Both women understand all too well what it’s like to live with a disability. Vicki Kerkvliet was born with osteogenesis imperfecta, which is a genetic disorder that causes bones to be brittle and break easily. Kendra Gottsleben was born with a rare condition — Mucopolysaccaridpsis (MPS) Type V1. Because of this condition, she has to receive weekly treatments of lifesaving enzymes. As well, both women are familiar with using wheelchairs on a regular basis for mobility purposes.
In an attempt to help get contestants, the two women have decided to turn to Facebook for assistance. As of present, obstacles tend to be travel and the fact that all women must give a three-minute speech and interview with the judging panel.
Be the Positive Change
It’s quit inspiring to see that these two women have decided to pursue such an amazing event in hopes of promoting a positive change. It’s important that anyone and everyone can make a change in this world. With the right attitude and hard work, goals and dreams pay off! Are you interested in learning more about this contest?
