If you follow this Blog, then you already know that we dedicate time to talk about different types of wheelchair sports. Wheelchair sports are important for several reasons. Not only are these sports fun and a great way to meet new people, but they also help to keep those who are in wheelchairs stay fit and healthy. There are so many different types of wheelchair sports to choose from and participate in. Take a look at some of the most popular wheelchair sports:
Wheelchair Basketball
Interestingly enough, most of the rules for wheelchair basketball follow the rules of regular basketball. However, there is one big difference — traveling. In wheelchair basketball, a player is considered to have “traveled” when he or she touches the wheels of their chair more than two times after receiving or dribbling the basketball.
Wheelchair Tennis
Again, wheelchair tennis is practically played and judged as regular tennis. Two or four plays can be on one side of the court at a time and a ball is hit back and forth over a net. The only difference, and obvious one at that, is the fact that players are not running. Participants use their wheelchairs to move towards the ball.
Wheelchair Rugby
Depending on your location, you may find wheelchair rugby to be quite popular. Played indoors and on a hardwood floor, the rules of wheelchair rugby combine the rules of wheelchair basketball, ice hockey, handball, and rugby union. It’s important to note that wheelchair rugby is in face a contact sport and that contact between wheelchairs is an important part of the game.
