In Maui this past weekend, the Day of Hope 5 and 10K race took place. Like any other race, this event had plenty of walkers and runners surrounding the finish line. However, there was another group of contestants who successfully finished the race without walking or running, but rolling.
Sponsoring the Day of Hope 5 and 10K race was the Four Seasons Maui, who allowed the non-profit group, Ainsley’s Angels Hawaii, to have their entry fee into the race completely waived. The “Captains” of the group were those who were actually in the wheelchairs, while the “Angels” of the group were those who assisted the “Captains” by pushing them.
Interestingly enough, the Day of Hope race that took place this past weekend (all of the proceeds accumulated from the race were contributed to Maui’s Pacific Cancer Foundation) was not the first race that Ainsley’s Angels have participated in. This group has proudly participated in six other 5 and 10K races in Maui — they don’t’ plan on stopping, either! In fact, they have a plan to conquer adversity. This plan will stay in motion when they participate in the Valley Isle Road Runners Christmas 5 and 10K races.
Staying Active
Are you currently looking for different ways to stay active in a wheelchair? If you are interested in taking part in a local racing event, then check your community to see what events will be taking place in the future. You may be surprised at the various opportunities that are available. If a racing event doesn’t happen to be taking place in a location near you, then consider organizing one. You may find other people in your community who would also like to participate.
Perhaps racing isn’t for you? If you’re still looking for ways to stay active, then form another type of local sporting event. There are so many different options to choose from — have fun creating a new organization for local residents!
