After working in the construction business for over 20 years, Julian Gordon was ready for a change of pace. He no longer enjoyed the boom-or-bust cycle of the industry and decided he needed a change. He was looking for something better to do with his life. He had the equipment and the manpower; therefore, he decided to apply his metalworking skills to accessibility products — like wheelchairs ramps for the elderly and disabled.
It was back in 1998 that he designed and patented an all-steel modular ramp system that eventually got into more than 200 U.S. medical supply stores. However, the business soon started to be just as frustrating as the construction business. Therefore, in 2002, he decided to turn to franchising. He sold the first Amramp franchise — his company now has 50 units across the United States and one in Canada.
What’s great about this franchise is the fact that it allows wheelchair ramps to be kept in small warehouses, making wheelchairs available to be installed as soon as a patient leaves the hospital. The company now even offers other products, too. These different products include stair lifts and portable showers.
The Future . . .
By 2023, there will be 70 million Americans on Medicare. Therefore, insurance companies will be looking for low-cost ramps to facilitate people being taken care of in their homes. It’s important for a franchise to be able to relate to their customers and have empathy for those in need. It’s especially helpful when franchises have some sort of medical background to better assist those in needs.
Helping Out
It’s always important to help those out who are in need. Remember — everyone needs help at some point in their live. It’s very inspiring to see how Julian Gordon decided to change his profession to do something much more meaningful.
