If you’re in a wheelchair and you’ve been looking for different avenues to help you explore volunteer work, we can help! For your benefit, we’ve put together some ideas and tips for those who are interested in learning to assist others. It’s important to remember that everyone needs help at some point in their life — lending a helping hand is quite honorable.
Various Areas to Explore
If you’re looking for different ways to give back to the community and help others, then we can help you! There are countless volunteer opportunities available; having a disability does not have to keep you from getting involved with said opportunities. Take a look:
Special Olympics
If you’re interested in sports, then consider getting involved with the Special Olympics. Volunteers are needed for every level of this event. Contact the Special Olympics office in your area. You may find yourself working as a coach, fan, scorekeeper, official — the list goes on and on.
After School Programs
If you enjoy working or being around children, then consider finding an after school program to volunteer in. Depending on the nature of your handicap, you may even want to consider volunteering for the Big Brothers and Big Sisters program.
Do You Like Animals?
If you like being around different types of animals, then consider finding volunteer work in that nature. Perhaps you have a local animal shelter in your area that is looking for volunteers or assistance.
Politics
If you’re interested in politics, then see if there’s anything political for you to get involved with in your community. For example, during election time, you can volunteer to help at the pools or for a political candidate.
Local Hospitals
If you enjoy helping others and their family, then volunteering at your local hospital may be best for you. The local nursing home may also prove to be a good avenue to explore.
What Motivates You?
If you’re passionate about volunteering, then start searching. Discover what particular areas motivate you and then search for work in that field. It may seem difficult at first, but volunteers are needed every day and in every type of environment.
