Choosing the Right Wheelchair

When it comes time to choosing a wheelchair, you should not make your decision hastily. If you are dependent on a wheelchair for mobility, you must take this into consideration when deciding which wheelchair is right for you. Will you be comfortable? Will it afford you the mobility you require? Will it work in the environments you visit most? All of these must factor into your decision.

Important Considerations When Picking a Wheelchair

You should take a multitude of different factors into consideration when deciding on a wheelchair. After all, this is no small decision; your wheelchair or scooter will play a significant role in your daily life. We urge you to consider the following:

Your Needs

What do you need your wheelchair or scooter to accomplish? Is it going to be used primarily for long-distance travel? Or do you need your wheelchair to provide you with mobility in your own home as well? This will factor into the type of wheelchair that can suit your needs. This brings us to our next consideration.

Types of Devices

Not all wheelchairs are created equally, nor do they aim to accomplish the same goals. While it's true they are all designed for the purpose of enabling mobility, their similarities in many ways end there. You can choose from the following devices:

How you pay for your wheelchair may impact your decision. For example, if you are paying out of pocket, you will want to be mindful of your budget. However, paying out of pocket does afford you the benefit of being able to choose the wheelchair or scooter of your choice (so long as you can afford it, of course). This is something to take into consideration if you were originally planning on using Medicare, Medicaid, or traditional insurance – particularly given our affordable membership options. Paying out of pocket grants you freedom.

You may also choose to use Medicare or Medicaid (or private insurance). In many cases, individuals using such payment options will be required to undergo an evaluation. When undergoing your evaluation, seek out a center that has experience with your specific type of injury or disability. This will help guarantee that you are properly evaluated and cared for. The benefit of using this payment method, of course, is that there is little to no cost for you!
